One of the Largest Computing Grids has been launched for the LHC which is capable of streaming the equivalent of 3 million DVD’s in a year.
Its a Worldwide computing Grid for the Large Hadron collider which can draw upto processing power from about 100,000 processors.
The Comupting grid will allow the Scientists from all over the world to process the 15 petabytes of data which will be generated by the LHC every year.
Many scientists have spent years on building the grid. The grid also has a dedicated10 Gbps connection to 11 main sites, which include main universities and laboratories in the network. The high bandwidth grid computing will change the way research is carried out.
Robert Aymar, Director General of Cern said that “About half the world’s scientists will be looking at this data. It is a true world effort.” He also said that this kind of data processing will change the rate of scientific discovery.
The grid has also processed around 44 million computing tasks in 2007 for the launch of the particle accelerator and then around 65 million computing jobs in 2008 so far.
Cern has spent around €100m n the Grid.
The grid will start it complete might in the spring of 2009 when the LHC starts again. The particle accelerator is not running right now, after a fault stopped its operation.
