The tomb of the Great General of Rome Marcus Nonius Macrinus has been discovered during a construction work in northbound Via Flaminia.
The film character of Gladiator played by Russell Crowe in the Oscar winning film of “Gladiator” was a favourite of Marcus Aurelius, the Emperor of Rome.
The tomb has collapsed long ago, but because of Tiber`s mud the large marble blocks have been preserved from the atmosphere’s attack. There are evidences that the area was subjected to floods in ancient times. Sometimes such natural disasters prove to be helpful. The mud from the flood in the Tiber River, sealed the marble blocks, keeping them safe from getting damaged.
This discovery has been made by Italian archaeologists. The Roman soil unearthed Marble beams and columns and carvings. This latest archaeological site is located on the banks of the Tiber River. Further discoveries uncover a tomb, the inscriptions conformed on a huge marble block revealed that the tomb was of the Great General. General Macrinus ( Gladiator) was born on Brescia in northern Italy in 138 A.D.
The true meaning of Gladiator is prisoners of war, slaves or convicted criminals who were trained to fight with swords inorder to entertain the Romans. Gladiator comes from a latin name Gladius meaning Sword.
