I recently Migrated my Laptop from Windows Xp to Ubuntu 8.10 and i think its the best possible move I have made after a long time.
I was quite sceptical at first about the Migration so uploaded Ubuntu on a partition on my Laptop. So now I had the option to choose between Ubuntu 8.10 or Windows XP when i boot up my Laptop.
It was very easy, As soon as you boot up Ubuntu it will automatically upload all the drivers needed for your Laptop Hardware without you telling it which hardware you have. Helps when you are not aware about the hardware on your PC or Laptop.
And after the Installation was done I was completely Blown away by the quality of graphics on Ubuntu and then by the sound quality. I had no idea that just changing a OS would have so much effect on the Graphics and Sound.

Then the most important check that I had to perform was to check if I can access my word and excel documents. Again i was able to do so which much ease using Open Office. And with all the features that i had with MS Excel and MS Powerpoint.
Then I had to secure my PC, so I started searching ways to secure it on Ubuntu. Again to my surprise I did not have to spend any money on expensive Anti-Virus as I had no threat of Viruses, Spywares and Malwares on Ubuntu.
Then I had to migrate all my mails from Oulook Express to Thunderbird on Ubuntu. It was as easy as copying a folder from Windows and replacing it in Ubuntu and all this with the help of Ubuntu Forum.

The Ubuntu Forum also helped me to transfer all my saved passwords, Bookmarks and cache from Windws Firefox to Ubuntu.
In the past i tried the Microsoft Forum and let me tell you they are the worst people to ask for help. The guys at Ubuntu were so helpfull they eevn gave me a few tips on how to optimize my Laptop use.
The last thing that made me a complete Ubuntu fan was when i accidently tried to install something on ubuntu and messed up the look of my Ubuntu Desktop. The only thing that i had to do was to copy a folder from my frieds PC who had Ubuntu installed and paste and replace it in my home directory and wallah done my Laptop look was back to normal.

If it had been Windows I would have had to reinstall it which agan takes around 2 to 3 hours.
So trust me and migrate to Ubuntu as soon as possible.
I know most softwares are initialy not supported on Ubuntu for now, but believe me once people start using it software developers would have no choice but to make it Ubuntu compatible or Linux Compatible.

Thumbs up for ubuntu 8.10 indeed, i’m running it on a USB stick, which is very nice.
I am now able to take all my important data with me, and with my own pre-configured operating system to boot on the same USB stick, and if I want I can use someone else’s computer to do my own work with my USB stick.
One thing though, why I still haven’t completely switched to Ubuntu, is the games.
I play a lot of Grand Theft Auto San Andreas, and Command and Conquer 3, and these games just don’t run real well yet, even with WINE.
But as soon as Ubuntu finds a way to enable people to buy a PC game intended for windows and play it on their Ubuntu PC, I’d definately get rid of microsoft :D
If anyone finds a way to play these games through Ubuntu , feel free to let me know :)
I am always looking for my chance to laugh at Bill Gates :P
It may be worth mentioning that compared to Windows install time Ubuntu installs in around 20-30 minutes :)
I’m glad you’re enjoying your experience so far. The forums are a fantastic place for help, I wouldn’t be using Ubuntu if it wasn’t for them.
Folks,
I have an IBM T43 and ubunutu is somehow not a good idea for this interms of graphics and display.I need to know would this issue be sorted if not then the compiz effects etc can never be supported on this machine.
the second question is which is the best hardware for ubuntu
am also using ubuntu 8.10 for less than month, i was shocked when i saw the visual effect (compiz) the most thing that i liked is when u need a (e.g) codec’s to play a movie or sound file the ubuntu automatically search for the suitable codec and download them for free and also the programs not like windows just pay pay pay for any program, so when i have such an OS like ubuntu with free programs and support there is no need to pay money for buying an OS like windows and then i have to pay for anti virus and and and …
I am downloading ubuntu 8.10 at the moment, but i am not sury if you can run ubuntu on say; an usb-stick or cd, and run windows XP (my current OS) seperately, with that i mean; at one moment ubuntu and at the other win XP, so that ubuntu doesn’t completely take over my PC, and is it really a good comparison to Linux? thnx

Dear Website owner
I must apologies, I am being a complete idiot and my greed is cause for concern. I am a missionary and I have strong beliefs in the teachings of Jesus. One of those teachings was love thy neighbor.
By doing what is obviously not based upon live but greed I sincerely ask your forgiveness, Should you want to talk to me about the spirit of love that should move us all – after all the beauty that god provides is free to look at and photograph I would like to share that love with your readers and not show the spiteful persnickety person my real human fear of loss caused me to show. So again in all humble honesty I apologize wholeheartedly for the rude and abrupt way I wrote on this public forum.
Google use Ubuntu allot, yeah, great :D
